The Bay Area Justice Funders Network (BAJFN) is an alliance of funders working to help advance a justice agenda and strengthen grantmaking for social justice movements in the Bay Area and beyond. They engage in a range of projects and activities that help the philanthropic community to become a more active, coordinated, and accountable partner in efforts to grow and advance movements for justice.

We helped them get setup with their site for the initial launch of their organization using Drupal to manage their content and updates to their members. We also helped them get started on Big Tent which Justice Funders use to coordinate members and projects.

Founded in 1969, Chinese for Affirmative Action protects the civil and political rights of Chinese Americans and to advance multiracial democracy in the United States. CAASF had been running their site on a very old version of Wordpress and only provided information for their constituency in English. We updated their site to the latest version of Wordpress and further refined the original design. We also developed a multi-lingual feature for the site, allowing users to view content in Chinese. CAASF felt that people who spoke primarly Chinese might have different areas of importance than English-primary speakers and so content as well as navigation for each version of the site were set up to be independent where necessary. Visit Site »

First Graduate helps students finish high school and become the first in their families to graduate from college. Their previous site was difficult for staff to edit and their content had long outgrown the initial site they had set up. We migrated them to Drupal, giving them more flexibility with their site for both layout and content types. We also helped simplify and focus their site structure giving more prominence to the areas they are focusing on and helped to strategize related internal content to keep users on the site.

Hyphen Magazine is devoted to interests, culture and issues in the Asian American community. When I came on board, they were frustrated with their CMSs (they were using two) and lack of vibrancy that embodied their print publication. I helped to move them to a Drupal based site that unified their content management and opened the door for adding many new features to their site to better match their dynamic and popular magazine.

A part of the larger organization, JACL Health Benefits Administrators (JACLHBA) offers quality affordable health care plans to it’s members. The primary goal of the redesign was to improve the user experience for JACLHBA’s growing client base, providing information about the organization and their insurance offerings. The redesign also sought to better feature the benefits of choosing JACL over other insurance providers. In addition, we worked to enable the JACL Health staff to maintain and update the web site content independently.

OneWebDay seeks to broaden the public’s awareness of Internet and Web issues while deepening a culture of participation in building a Web that works for everyone. OneWebDay was founded by Susan Crawford, cyberlaw scholar, former Board Member of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, and current technology policy advisor to President Obama. In 2009 they sought to increase the support they gave to their participanted included was a ‘clearer vision and mission, leadership development and resources for volunteer organizers, a robust and inviting set of collaboration tools, and a more effective public presence.’

As part of KEI Creative, I worked with the new Executive Director Nathan James to create a more compelling website that matched this new direction and effort.Included in this project was integration into a CMS and social network subsite as well as content strategy.

The Mitchell Kapor Foundation works to ensure fairness and equity, particularly for low-income communities of color. They support organizations and activism which illuminate and mitigate the conditions and dynamics of inequality. As a Senior Creative Producer at Kapor Creative, I redesigned mkf.org to better organize the programs and the new direction the Foundation had taken. Included in the redesign was a online grants application section, making it easier for grantseekers to understand the Foundation’s offerings and apply. The site is also editable by the staff, due to training given after the site was finalized. The Foundation is also one of the only foundations to blog about its grants process and work.
